SALLY ELLYN LIVED in Albany, Kentucky. As a high school senior, she and her best friend, Justine Griffin, were spending the week visiting Augusta University. They both had been accepted at AU, along with several other colleges. So this month, they were college hunting to see where they wanted to attend.

When Aidan spoke to her mother, both girls were looking more at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. However, that week, they went to visit AU and were supposed to return home by Saturday morning.

Neither of the girls showed, nor had they answered their phones. But since they hadn’t been missing for forty-eight hours, the families were unable to call in a missing person’s report, and they didn’t know anyone in Augusta.

Aidan e-mailed Sally’s parents a photo of their Jane Doe in hopes that she would be identified.

Soon after the e-mail went through, Sally’s father called Aidan, confirming that their victim was indeed their seventeen-year-old daughter—their only child.

Aidan’s heart felt as if it broke a little as he spoke to Mr. Ellyn.

“I’m so sorry, sir,” he said, nodding at Shaun, to let him know their Jane Doe had a name. “I know that’s very little consolation.”

“Do … do you know who took my baby girl away from us?” Mr. Ellyn’s voice shook as he spoke. “Who would do such a thing?”

“I’m afraid we don’t have a lead yet, Mr. Ellyn, but I promise we’re going to do everything we can to find justice for your daughter.”

“You said you’re the FBI, right?” Mr. Ellyn asked. “Not the police?”

“That’s right.”

“Why is the FBI investigating my daughter?”

Aidan hesitated a beat.

“Tell me, please. This is my baby girl.”

“We have reasons to believe your daughter may have been a victim of …” He paused again, unsure of how to break the news. There was no easy way, unfortunately. “We believe Sally may have been killed by a serial murderer.”

“A serial … you don’t mean … The Doll Killer? The one from the news?”

“Yes.”

“Oh, goodness.” Mr. Ellyn sobbed into the phone.

“Do you know if your daughter was trying online dating recently?”

“No, not to our knowledge. Sally’s got a boyfriend. They’ve been together since her sophomore year. They’ve talked about marriage.”

“What’s his name?”

“Noah. Noah Braden. He’s a good kid.”

“I’ll need his contact information if you have it,” Aidan said, jotting down the name.

“Yes, of course. But, let me be the one to tell him about Sally. I don’t want him to hear it from the FBI.”

“Of course, Mr. Ellyn. What about Justine? Did she have a boyfriend?”

“Yes. They started dating within the last year, I believe. Although I’m not completely sure. Do you need me to get his information?”

“Please.”

“I’ll get it and get back in touch.”

“Thanks. When was the last time you spoke with your daughter?”

“Friday night. She called to say she and Justine were on their way back home. Wait … Justine. Have you been in contact with her?”

Aidan frowned. “I’m afraid not, sir. I’ll send people out to find Justine. What car were they driving?”

“A navy blue Honda Civic.
